The basic level of training includes anatomical and surgical assessment of the maxillary and mandible bones, planning and selection of appropriate access for mandibular and maxillary osteotomies, and genioplasty. An important aspect is to familiarize students with surgical instruments and devices used during orthognathic surgery and to learn the basics of a skillful approach to the operating field, and avoid some of the early surgical complications. Learning the basics of surgical anatomy and important landmarks of each approach should improve students' awareness and explain more about the anatomical complexity of the facial bone region of the skull and oral cavity in a practical way.
The workshop part includes preparing surgical instruments and the surgical field for each surgical procedure. Another aspect will be focused on the selection of an appropriate surgical access for performing a corrective osteotomy of the mandible, BSSO (Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy), including a Lefort I jaw osteotomy and chin plastic surgery - genioplasty. Due to the anatomical variability of the structure and shape of the bones, an important aspect will be the clinical and intraoperative identification of important elements influencing a well-performed surgical procedure. In the first basic practical part of the course, the problem of topographic and surgical anatomy will be a very important issue in planning and performing a surgical procedure. Due to the access created for maxillary osteotomy, the course participants will learn about other basic intranasal procedural such as the approach to the turbines, nasal septum plastic surgery, including osteoplasty of the pear-shaped aperture, and will become familiar with techniques for identifying important arteries and plexuses in this area, as well as methods for maintaining good surgical hemostasis. The first part of the course is intended to convey the basic and most important technical and anatomical issues, preparing the operating surgeon to safely and efficiently perform basic procedures in the field of orthognathic surgery.
